The pyrotechnic sector – including manufacturing, storage and selling of fireworks – is particularly risky and affected by frequent accidents and injuries (usually fatal). Inail, in collaboration with the Ministry of Interior and Ministry of Defense, has drawn up the following booklet, whose aim is helping pyrotechnical enterprises – mostly small-sized and artisan ones – to manage occupational safety and health (OSH). The booklet deals with several topics, for instance

  • Main OSH legislative regulations applicable to the pyrotechnic sector, including the legislative decree n° 81/2008 (a milestone in Italy).
  • Description of the typical productive cycles featuring fireworks’ manufacturing.
  • Analysis and assessment of some specific risks, either “traditional” (above all fire, explosion and exposure to dangerous chemicals) either “emergent” ones (exposure to nanoparticles).
  • Preventive and protective measures, including procedures in case of emergency and safety signs.
  • Hints on OSH management in enterprises with a risk of “relevant accidents”, according to the legislative decree n° 105/2015.

Moreover, the following annexes enrich the booklet’s contents:

  • Annex 1: Evaluation of the risks related to manual handling of loads and to vibrations.
  • Annex 2: CEI 64-2 Technical Standard, concerning protection against explosions for electrical devices and plants.
  • Annex 3: List of the main chemicals (substances and mixtures) used in pyrotechnics.
  • Annex 4: Fundamental structure of a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS).
